Stone chip repairs in Switzerland

🎬 "Stone chip in the windshield - What now?"

"Do you have a stone chip in your windshield and are wondering if you need to take immediate action? I'm Christoph from Social Autoglass - and in this blog post, I'll explain what you should know before making a decision."

What is a stone chip?

"A stone chip is usually caused by small stones hitting the windshield at high speed, damaging the outer pane of the glass sandwich (glass-PVB-glass). It may look quite harmless - a small dot, a star, or a crescent. But don't underestimate it: Tiny damage can quickly develop into a major problem."

⚠️ Why you shouldn't wait

"Temperature fluctuations, vibrations, torsional movements of the body, and moisture can all exacerbate the damage. A small crack can spread overnight – and then repair is often no longer possible. Furthermore, a stone chip in the driver's field of vision is a real safety risk and can even cause problems during a demonstration."

Repair or replacement?

"Whether the windshield can be repaired depends on three factors:

1. Size of the damage – smaller than a 2-euro coin? Good chance.

2. Position – in the driver's field of vision? In Switzerland, the technician and ultimately the driver are responsible for ensuring a clear view.

3. Depth – if the damage extends to the film, it usually has to be replaced, as the resin injection appears as a "flower" between the glass and film layer. This is all transparent, but you can see that a stone chip has been repaired. Technically sound, but aesthetically questionable."

💰 What does the insurance cover?

"The good news: Most partial comprehensive insurance policies cover the entire cost of the repair – with no deductible and without a higher coverage rate. A deductible may be due for replacement, but this also depends on the contract."
